Taxes: What are they?

A lot of teens think of taxes as something distant, but the truth is, they are something that is very much real and there are many ways in which you can begin to prep to pay for them. The best way to learn, though, is to grasp some of the basic concepts, which we will discuss in this article.

Lets start with gross vs. net pay. Now, I’m assuming that you know what taxes are conceptually (basically, a fee you have to pay to the government depending on how much you earn and spends). Gross vs. net pay gives a direct comparison of how much you earn before versus after taxes, with gross being your raw income, and net being your income after taxes.

Another thing that you should understand is how taxes are paid. Essentially, you report your income, assets, and more, and the government deducts as it sees fit. In order to avoid confusion and pay your taxes the most accurately it is important you start keeping track of stuff like this now to build healthy habits in the future.

In summary, taxes are something that are cornerstone part of life, so you should prepare for them early, and you can do so as a teen by learning about them, and interacting with them if possible by, for example, speaking to your parents.
