The Overlap between Business and the Military

This is a biography for Scott Giles, a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy who has climbed his way up in the professional world:

After graduating from the Air Force Academy in 2008, I embarked on a 12-year journey in the United States Air Force that would fundamentally shape my professional life. My career began as a satellite operator in the 2nd Space Operations Squadron, where I was responsible for GPS operations. In this high-stakes environment, I quickly learned the importance of technical expertise and clear communication. Working as part of a tightly knit team, I discovered how to stay calm and professional under pressure—skills that have proven invaluable in every role since.

Four years later, I transitioned to Los Angeles Air Force Base, serving as an acquisitions officer for a missile warning satellite program. This role introduced me to the business side of government operations, from contract management to stakeholder engagement. One of the greatest benefits was the daily exposure to senior leaders whose expertise and strategic vision inspired me to continuously seek growth. Their mentorship helped me understand the importance of adaptability, ethical leadership, and the power of collaboration across teams of all sizes.

Throughout my military career, I had the privilege of leading and managing diverse teams to accomplish complex goals. The military brings together individuals from varied backgrounds, each contributing unique strengths and perspectives. I learned that effective leadership means fostering inclusion, respecting differences, and aligning everyone toward a common mission. These lessons have been invaluable as I transitioned to the private sector.

Today, I serve as a Strategic Account Director at Microsoft. The discipline, adaptability, and leadership skills I developed in the Air Force continue to guide my work—whether I’m building client relationships, leading cross-functional teams, or driving innovative solutions. My military experience taught me that success is built on teamwork, integrity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. I am grateful for the opportunities my service provided and proud to apply those lessons every day in my professional career.
